Ramblings of a Young Aussie Writer

And I’m Back…… — October 16, 2019

And I’m Back……

After a long absence, I’m back! In my time away, I’m suddenly a lot older, not much wiser, started a new career and now have a tiny human to keep alive. So needless to say not too much has changed. Couped up with a toddler, I’ve sorely missed blogging and the need to share my daily child wrangling fun, writing experiences and crazy thoughts. My is burning into my fingertips yearn to document the crazy thoughts in my head.

Motherhood has changed me more than I thought it could. I didn’t realise that small humans were THAT helpless for THAT long! Being a stay at home mum has been bittersweet. I love my small human, she’s fantastic but I miss being able to be something other than a mum. I’m thankful that I’m studying my degree to be a teacher and have to use my intellect for more than just outsmarting a toddler.

Writing has taken a backseat as I focus on my degree, being domestic and wrangling the small human, and I’m devastated about that. I’m currently on a break which has given me the opportunity to fire up my blog again – even if it’s only for my own sanity.

My strange musings will be posted on this blog and I’d love to make blogging friends. Now to fix up the look of this blog and get writing!

The First Chapter — February 17, 2017

The First Chapter

Kindle and Apple ibooks have free eBook samples of many books and personally, I think it’s a fantastic idea. From a reader’s perspective, this is a great way to see if a book appeals to your interest before buying it. From an author’s perspective, I’d say this would put a lot more pressure on them to write a first chapter that will ensnare the reader into the story you’ve created.

For those who have had books traditionally published, they’ve already had to impress the publishing company to get their book published. The problem with that, is impressing a few people is a whole world different to impressing millions of people worldwide.

Without these free first chapter samples, the most important part was writing a blurb that would entice people to buy your book, especially on the eBook front. With these free exerts, the first chapter needs to be almost as good as the blurb but no pressure or anything.

On a positive note for authors, at least if someone reads the sample and decides the book is unappealing to them, they won’t be leaving a one star review.

Naturally, a fantastic first chapter doesn’t ensure a great storyline but hey, at least the first chapter was great.

Of course when it comes to print books, well, if the cover is great then at the very worst it will look good on your bookshelf.

Twilight – Stephenie Meyer 5 Star Book Review — March 29, 2015

Twilight – Stephenie Meyer 5 Star Book Review

Twilight

Stephenie Meyer

5 Star Review

Finally I got around to reading Twilight (I know I’m only years late). Although a lot of people joke about both the books and movies, I personally found that it was well deserving of the fame it has gotten.

Positives I was shocked that I actually adored this book. The movies have certainly not done the books justice (although that is the case for most book – film conversions). Edward was a fantastic character and had a real sense of humour which the movie seemed to exclude. Stephenie’s writing style was enrapturing and really got you lost in her words.

NegativesAt one part in the book the timeline seemed to be off but apart from that I really didn’t find any other notable faults.

Overall The movies were great but the books are fantastic so if you’ve seen the movies then you definitely NEED to read the books. I would recommended these books to anyone. 5 Star Writing!

The Confusing Etiquette Of Being A Female — February 25, 2015

The Confusing Etiquette Of Being A Female

I work in an INCREDIBLY male dominated industry and because of that I find myself regularly checking to make sure I still use the correct etiquette for a lady. I am a huge believer in the proper manners, respect and of course etiquette. The very biggest issue is something I have only just thought about lately. Surprisingly it’s the handshake. Yep, it doesn’t seem like something you’d think twice about but your handshake can say a lot about you. A simple gesture that lasts merely seconds can convey a lot about you to another person.

There are many, many things that are appropriate and very inappropriate for a women even in this day and age. I’m all for feminism but I endeavour to always act like a lady. This handshake realisation came over me when I was telling my husband how some people shake your hand limply and I felt it was weird. He proceeded to tell me that women usually don’t have even a remotely strong handshake and that’s probably why some men shake hands with a women gently. I suddenly became hyper aware of my handshake. What if I shake hands like a man? As stupid as it sounds, I was horrified to think I had a ‘bloke’ handshake. I can’t rationalise my feelings on this but it got me thinking.

There are a million contradicting actions involved in acting correctly in public if you’re a female. It is exhausting trying to remember to every single appropriate action in public. From a gentle handshake (which I assume portrays how feminine your are?) to walking anywhere with soft steps, hands gently by your side, shoulders back, head held high and delicate paces. It’s exhausting just thinking about it.

I’m inclined to actually google the correct way for a woman to shake hands with someone – yes I think I have gone crazy. It is these moments in my life that inspires the actions of my characters in my writing. From every situation in life we can take away something that will inspire our thoughts because after all, the best books are those that capture the essence of real life in their pages.

I added a funny photo just for those men out there that need some handshake tips 😉

Does An Author’s Previous Success Influence Their New Book’s Success? — February 19, 2015

Does An Author’s Previous Success Influence Their New Book’s Success?

Quite a few of my favourite authors have recently released new books. Naturally I was excited to read these new books because of course I had high expectations of them. The most obvious is the Teardrop series by Lauren Kate. I loved her first series – Fallen so I was eager to read her newest series. I was very disappointed when I finished the book Teardrop. It rated very low for me (check out my review of it Here). I honestly believe though that if Lauren Kate hadn’t already made a name for herself the book Teardrop would’ve been an absolute disaster and there would be at least thousands of people who wouldn’t have bought and read it, myself included. The second book Waterfall was even worse than the first but once again I think people believe that maybe she could redeem herself with book two of the series. That was not the case and it was an even worse book than the first.

This got me thinking though – if a writer has already made a name for themselves are they more likely to rate higher than if they were previously unknown? I fully believe that is the case most of the time.

What Songs Are On Your Playlist? — February 4, 2015

What Songs Are On Your Playlist?

I don’t think I could live without music. Beautiful words sung in a beautiful tune is something that can really ignite my imagination. I always seem to have music playing, even when I’m writing. Today just for something different, I thought I’d share the songs on my favourite playlist and I would love everyone else to share some of their favs too. This is judgement free zone on music choice 😉

My Top Ten – Not in any particular order

1. Heart by Heart – Demi Lovato

2.The Heart Wants What It Wants – Selena Gomez

3. Clean – Taylor Swift

4. Skyscraper – Demi Lovato

5. You Ruin Me – The Veronicas

6.When The Darkness Comes – Colbie Caillat

7. Elastic Heart -Sia

8. Almost Is Never Enough – Ariana Grande

9. Clarity – Zed ft Foxes

10. Highway Don’t Care – Tim McGraw ft Taylor Swift

*Honourable mention to – My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark – Fall Out Boy* Just to prove I do like songs other than female artists.

It was really difficult to choose just 10 but I think those are my favourites right now (it changes regularly). I recently got the Mortal Instruments Sound Track and there are some awesome songs on there (hence why I’ve got three on my list). Most of those songs have really great lyrics and that’s a lot of the reason why they’re my favourites playlist. The raw emotion in them helps me channel that into my writing.

Who else is game to post their fav songs?

Bleeding Out These Raw Words Straight From My Soul — November 27, 2014

Bleeding Out These Raw Words Straight From My Soul

d473e30913516c24837bcece990b57a0

Today is one of those days where typing out the words that are inspired by a difficult situation is harder than ever. I assume all authors draw some inspiration from certain life events and it is those significant events that shape us so hell why not share our emotional experiences with our readers. The great thing is though that we can cloak the realness of our experience behind our characters. Our readers never have to know how real a situation is to us or whether or no we have experienced something like that. We draw our inspiration from every aspect of life and that includes the books we read and movies we watch.

As hard as it can be to write down these words and as horrible as it is to remember the tough moments from where the inspiration is drawn, it is sometimes great therapy. I find that sometimes writing about things gives me a release from the emotional pressure that can build up. As a reader I know that when I read a part of a book where a character has to go through a situation that relates to something in my life I feel a closeness with them. Those words can leave your scars raw but it can benefit both you and your readers greatly. I’ll be your fan club and remember I’ll be cheering for you and sympathising with you as you bleed out those words.

Stay strong my friends xox

Writing the ‘Hard Parts’ – NaNoWriMo — November 11, 2014

Writing the ‘Hard Parts’ – NaNoWriMo

NaNoWriMo is well under way and I’m sure there are others like myself who are trailing (even just a little) in the word count. I’m a first timer and I don’t think I’ve been taking it as seriously as I thought but I’m not far from catching up. It’s been head down tail up the last two days to ensure I don’t fail but it’s been fun.

nanowrimo toon

The problem that I have realised is affecting my word count is the fact that I’m currently writing the ‘hard parts.’ Hopefully I’m not naive in thinking that I’m far from the only one who has those parts of their book that isn’t as fun or is maybe even emotionally taxing. It’s the latter for me at the moment. The part I’m writing contains a lot of raw emotion and I’ve found myself avoiding my daily writing when I can because after I finish my 1600+ words I’m left drained. This work in progress contains parts that draw on previous experiences and the emotions that came along with them and to relive that can be a tiresome activity that I dread. If I keep going and work through it then it won’t be long before I’m writing the parts that I love. I’m exciting to get to that but I guess as with everything you have to do the hard yards before you can reach your goals.

Good luck fellow NaNoWriMo writers (and of course all writers in general). Just remember we all feel your pain when we write our ‘hard parts.’

Write on my friends xox

Nanowrimo Distractions — November 6, 2014

Nanowrimo Distractions

nanoprep

Its the 6th day of NaNoWriMo and I’m ‘almost’ on track with my word count. It’s my first time doing NaNoWriMo and I’m loving it. The strict time constraint really gives you the push to write, REALLY write until your story is told. Honestly I was very naive going into this and didn’t realise how crazy it would be staying on track. Over 1600 words per day didn’t seem too bad until I started to work out that one or two days missed writing meant I had to write at least 3200+ words the next day to keep up which felt like an insurmountable goal for just one busy day. It’s been awhile since I’ve been at school and I had forgotten the repercussions of not doing your ‘homework.’ Difficult as it may be, I’m enjoying using it as a great excuse to actually sit down and write. I’ve been taking it very seriously and I won’t allow the thought that I won’t finish, cross my mind.

Unfortunately though I’m a professional procrastinator and little things easily distract me, like for example – blogging and tweeting. Then there’s the bad habit of facebooking for 20mins+ every day without fail…. The worst part about NaNoWriMo is I don’t have the time to read 😦 I’m sure it’ll be worth the sacrifice in the end.

Procrastinating

What is the worst distraction from writing especially when trying to compete in NaNoWriMo?

Happy writing everyone!
